At the Sept. 24 meeting, we were joined by Bruce Schultz, chair of the Rotary 5790 Disaster Aid USA unit, along with Richard Hawker, who spoke about their efforts during our severe weather on Memorial Day weekend, and how our club can help moving forward.
Disaster Aid USA came to Pilot Point in its first-ever deployment, and helped to organize volunteers to assist homeowners with private property damage, which was instrumental in assisting our citizens with getting trees cleared and removed throughout the weeks after the May tornado.
Some statistics:
- There were 15,000 cubic yards of brush disposed at the Wastewater Treatment Plant and 2,000 cubic yards of brush disposed at Allan Groff Park
- There were 26 40-yard roll-off containers filled and emptied
- There were 650 volunteer hours organized by Disaster Aid USA, with more than 500 residents assisted
Disaster Aid is currently deployed to assist those affected by Hurricane Helene on the east coast.
So how can we get involved?
Join the Board, help with communications and volunteer organization during emergency situations, assist with Public Information social campaigns and help with volunteer housing.
Disaster Aid also takes donations to help stock the trucks with needed materials.
